If you’re ever in Albuquerque, you have to try the Sandia Peak Tramway. It was the longest tramway in the world until recently when Vietnam went ahead and built a longer one. This tram was manufactured in Switzerland in the mid 1960’s, so if you’re leery of getting in a little glass box to go up the side of a mountain, don’t be. The Swiss knew what they were doing and this is an awesome experience.

The tram ride lasts about 15 minutes and there is a restaurant at the top that serves good food and even better margaritas. But that’s creature comfort and not the reason to take the tram. It’s the view of Albuquerque spread out at your feet that is breathtaking and then try imagining 800 hot air balloons drifting through the currents. The annual Hot Air balloon Fiesta is in October and this is the best seat in town for the spectacle.

The weather changes drastically from the bottom desert air to the thin, cooler mountain air, so dress appropriately. In fact, check the weather forecast before you go up. Too windy and they will close the tram until the winds die down.

Take a trip late afternoon, wander around a bit and take the Sandia Peak Tramway back down just as the sky explodes into a Jackson Pollock kind of sunset. It is an unforgettable array from Mother Nature.
